The technology of filmmaking and digital video making is developing rapidly. Meanwhile, the lighting requirements of film and video making is also becoming more and more. At present, LED lighting products have been accepted by studios, directors, and gaffers with its convenient functions and high CRI value. Here I would like to share some benefits of MM’s high CRI LED film lights for video, cinematography, broadcast and film lighting.
Energy-saving and high efficiency of LED film lights
Generally, the efficiency of HMI, incandescent and LED lights is 80lm/W, 70lm/W and 110lm/W respectively. Especially, for tungsten lights, their efficiency is about 50lm/W.
That is to say, the higher the efficiency is, the lower the electric power consumption will be.
Higher brightness of LED film lights
As widely known, for lighting products, the electric power will be transferred into heat and light. Therefore, high efficiency also means high lumen output. In other words, when using the same amount of electricity, we will get higher brightness lighting solution via LED film lights.
The stable light quality of LED film lights
To power up the HMI light, we need to use a much higher voltage. In addition, after powering up the HMI light for one hour, the color temperature of it will be reduced for about 10 kelvins. Therefore, for 500 to 1000 hours later, the color temperature of HMI light will be far away from the accurate daylight (5600K). It will be no longer acceptable for film set lighting usage. While for LED film lights, generally, the lifetime of it would be last for more than 10,000 hours and even more.
The low working temperature of LED film lights
Unlike typical types of film lights, such as halogen, tungsten, HMI, etc. LED film lights will not generate high temperature that more than 25℃. This will solve the problem of high ambient temperature during film production.
More functions and more colors of LED film lights
For typical film lights, they can only create single color temperature light, such as tungsten lights only generate 3200 lights and HMI lights only emit 5600K light. Yet, LED film lights can be designed as color temperature tunable within a range, such as 2700K to 6500K. Furthermore, as the development of RGB colorful version, more and more LED film lights can provide color-changing function in order to create colorful light output or provide tint adjustment function. That is fairly convenient to meet needs of diverse scenes for film lighting.
Flicker-free of LED film lights
HMI lamps need to be driven with an alternating current to prevent migration of the constituent chemicals. This is implemented using a square wave current which ensures that the light output is essentially constant, however, the lamp current takes a finite amount of time to change direction, and this means that there is a short dip in light output at each square wave transition. At regular shooting speeds, this has no noticeable effect on the recorded image, but at higher shooting speeds this can become visible.
HMI lamps got to be driven with the AC power to stop the migration of the constituent chemicals. This can be enforced by employing a sq. wave current input that ensures the light output is essentially constant. However, the lamp current takes a finite quantity of time to vary direction, and this implies that there is a brief break in light output at every sq. wave. Therefore, the flicker will occur and become visible at high-speed shooting mode. While for LED film lights, the flicker problem can be eliminated by raising the PWM frequency through electrical design. So, the LED film lights can be truly flicker-free for high-speed film production.
